When should I start taking Metformin three times a day? - metformin; what to teach patients

My doctor has me on Metformin 500mg Friday. I'll take two mg a day for a total of 1000 per day. Well, I called and spoke with the nurse from my doctor today. She said I could go on to three times a day if I felt comfortable. I still have no significant side effects of taking drugs or a couple of days abdominal pain. My question is, their own experience, how long should I wait before going to three times a day?
